Spiders
Getting a spider can either be really exciting or incredibly scary depending on your opinions of arachnids but it’s probably best that we work on the assumption that you fall into the first category and take a look at the different areas which you will need to consider when you decide to take on an exotic spider. One of the main things which you will have to think about is how you are going to keep your spider.
Many exotic spiders, particularly the larger ones, need to be kept in temperature-controlled environments which dark places in which they can retire to. Some spiders will also be nocturnal and this will be something which you also need to take into consideration when deciding which spider you want to take on. There will be different tanks by different companies, all telling you that their specific tank is best for your needs; the only way to know for sure is to engage with all the facts, do plenty of research and arm yourself with the information you need to make an educated decision. When you’ve decided how you’re going to house your spider, you will also need to consider pet insurance.
Whilst there isn’t a need to insure spiders to the same degree as dogs or cats, exotic spiders can often need specialist care and thus it would be very wise to seek out specialist pet insurance which can cover the unique needs of your pet. As a rule of thumb, the rarer a pet, the more specialist the treatment it needs and thus the more expensive insurance will be. This, however, is a cost which is really unavoidable. Speak to your vet, and to your pet supplier as well, they should be able to recommend the best insurers for the species which you have chosen. Third-Party liability insurance for certain dog breeds might even be compulsory in the future according to recent report but it is not necessary here as there isn’t really any danger to other people from your exotic spider. Any venomous species will have their venom removed before you take them home and so that’s definitely one less thing which you need to worry about.
Taking on an exotic spider can be an exciting and thrilling journey but it is also one which you need to properly prepare for. Spiders have very specific accommodation and dietary needs and you will need to adhere to these strictly, if you do, you will have an intriguing and delightful family pet.
